This intriguing triptych has all the wit and artistry characteristic of James Christensen's artwork. He describes his painting: "Everyone has a friend or two involved in a sport that requires a lot of gear and a very specific approach. I see hunting birds with hammers mounted on flexible rods as pretty inefficient.
"Someone might say to one of the hunters, 'It would be easier with a gun,' and the hunter would reply, 'Yes, but where's the challenge in that?' The idea isn't to make it easier; it's to make it more fun, more sporting, and to allow more participation. The fun is in the preparation, in creating unique camouflage — although I suspect the guy using rocks will change his method next time out."
Each of these bird hunters is a "master" of technique, no matter how he's disguised — as another bird, a pear tree, a rock, a fungus-covered log, or even as a butterfly. That accounts for only five bird hunters, though. What about the sixth? Is it the fish? "No," Christensen says. "That's a decoy." Still can't find the sixth bird hunter? That's because he's very, very good.
